In cases of a compromised tooth, dental practitioners face the dilemma of whether to extract it for an implant or to restore it. While saving a natural tooth is often preferred, advanced technology has made dental implants a highly successful and reliable alternative. Making the best decision for a patient requires considering a range of factors, including the tooth's condition, overall patient health, and their preferences. This presentation will guide clinicians through this decision-making process.

Dr. Sun graduated from Dental School ranking #1 in his class. As a result of his academic standing, he had the honor to be automatically enrolled in their residency program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS). During a clinical rotation, he was exposed to Periodontics and discovered that this was the field of dentistry that he found was the best to his liking. Unfortunately, it was not possible for him to switch from Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency, to Periodontics Residency because of my commitments to his first choice of programs. Upon completion of his Oral and Maxillofacial Residency program with honors, he was able to perform surgical procedures encompassing the routine dento-alveolar surgeries; as well as the medically complex radical neck dissections accompanied by the necessary reconstructive phase of the total course of this disfiguring surgery. In the meanwhile, he earned his MS and PhD degrees while he was in the OMFS residency program.

In 2009, he graduated from the “Graduate Periodontics and Implant Surgery Program” at Loma Linda University School of Dentistry, in Loma Linda, California. This prestigious program gave him the opportunity to achieve his professional goal which is to become a prominent periodontist. His extensive surgical training and research experience helped him become an outstanding periodontist. He is able to apply basic science knowledge into his periodontal and implant clinical practice; while his surgical skills can fasten procedures and minimize tissue trauma under the guidance of science. But it was his everlasting eagerness to learn and ability for fast learning that made him one of the best periodontists.

His practice motto is “ Patient’s best interest is my only interest”.

When not working, Dr. Sun spends much of his time with his wife and three children. He is involved in his community and local church. He also enjoys reading, basketball, tennis, running and hiking in beautiful mountains of the Land of Enchantment.
