The Ethnic Studies Society is honored to invite you to the 5th Annual Education and Ethnic Studies Summit at Chapman University. At the Education and Ethnic Studies Summit, scholars, Chapman students and faculty, local educators, collaborate and build community towards the Summit Goals:
(1) Organize and be in solidarity with Ethnic Studies Movements at Chapman University;
(2) Organize and be in solidarity with the Ethnic Studies movements locally within Orange County;
(3) Provide space and resources for Ethnic Studies Movements statewide.
This year, there will be five days of FREE online events:

Kickoff - Chapman students and local poets and performers will introduce the summit themes with spoken word and music. Dr. Christine Sleeter will give a Keynote which will address the topics of: What is Ethnic Studies? And Why does Ethnic Studies Matter?

Eastman, Patriot Front, and Free Speech: Using Ethnic Studies to Understand the Impact of White Supremacy on Student Life at Chapman - Several student leaders on campus from different organizations and groups (including Chapman Feminists, LatinX, former BSU leadership, APPA, Chapman Activist Coalition, and others) will be hosting a student panel and activity. Following a presentation by Dr. Pete Simi, expert in White supremacy and terrorism will define, explain, and contextualize white supremacy and its impact on students at Chapman.

Ethnic Studies as Praxis: Stories from Classrooms & Communities (Concurrent Sessions) - Classroom teachers and students allow participants to experience the application of ethnic studies framework to classroom practice. Participants will learn about successful curriculum from veteran educators and their students.

Film Screening and Q&A - Chinatown Rising is a documentary film about Asian-American Movement from the perspective of the young residents on the front lines of their historic neighborhood in transition. Josh Chuck and Harry Chuck, producers, will share their story as documentarians. (Screening will be limited to 200 viewers)
6:30pm - 8pm (PDT) Spanish Interpretation Available
Origin Story: Panel Discussion with the founders of Ethnic Studies at San Francisco State - After a short break, activists Laureen Chew and Mason Wong will dialogue with Dr. Cathery Yeh and Dr. Suzi SooHoo about their experiences as Asian American activist working with neighboring communities of color in solidarity towards equity.

Scholar Symposium - Students from Chapman University (graduate and undergraduate) and local high schools and community colleges will present their research on Ethnic Studies, including thesis/capstone/dissertation; papers; projects; research and get feedback from others interested in their work.

Community Partner Panel - Doing the Work: Bridging Communities and Classrooms - A panel of local community organization leaders (from nonprofit organizations that work with Chapman, local teachers, and underrepresented communities) will answer student and community questions about how to bridge local community efforts towards justice with learning in classrooms (at collegiate and K-12 levels).
Diálogo entre colaboradores comunitarios – el trabajo en acción: Creando puentes entre las comunidades y los salones de clases – Un diálogo entre líderes de organizaciones comunitarias locales (organizaciones sin fines de lucro que colaboran con Chapman, maestres locales y comunidades subrepresentadas) donde responderán a preguntas de estudiantes y de la comunidad acerca de cómo crear puentes entre los esfuerzos comunitarios por la justicia y el aprendizaje dentro de los salones de clases (a nivel universitario y educación K-12).
