Keynote Speaker: Gustavo Arellano



Gustavo Arellano is author of Orange County: A Personal History and Taco USA: How Mexican Food Conquered America, a columnist for the Los Angeles Times and host of its daily news podcast “The Times,” and has been an essayist and reporter for various publications and a frequent commentator on radio and television. He was formerly editor of OC Weekly, an alternative newspaper in Orange County, California, and penned the award-winning “¡Ask a Mexican!,” a nationally syndicated column in which he answered any and all questions about America's spiciest and largest minority. Gustavo is the recipient of awards ranging from the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies for Best Columnist to the Los Angeles Press Club President's Award to an Impacto Award from the National Hispanic Media Coalition, and was recognized by the California Latino Legislative Caucus with a 2008 Spirit Award for his “exceptional vision, creativity, and work ethic.” Gustavo is a lifelong resident of Orange County and is the proud son of two Mexican immigrants, one whom came to this country in the trunk of a Chevy.

Goals of the Summit:

1. Organize and be in solidarity with the Ethnic Studies movements locally within Orange County; 

2. Organize and be in solidarity with Ethnic Studies Movements at Chapman University; 

3. Provide space and resources for Ethnic Studies Movements statewide

DAY 2: Education and Ethnic Studies Community Slam 

Time and Date: Saturday, May 7 from 11:00 - 2:00pm
Location: Attallah Piazza
Theme: Embodied Resistance

Overview: 
The Chapman student organizing body of this years Education and Ethnic Studies Summit would like to present an array of Chapman College student performances, visual art, dances, film, music, and beyond as a demonstration of this years summit theme “Embodied Resistance”. We are inspired by the dynamic atmospheres present in many slam poetry spaces that encourage us to connect with each other and engage in productive dialogue. Our Ethnic Studies Community Slam will be a multimedia-based even featuring the many talents and contributions our student body have to over. Hope to see you there!

The event is free, and open to everyone. Food and drink will be provided!
