Shaping Our Voices, Identities and Relationships Through the Power of Historias, Cuentos & Narrative Texts

Supporting the Advancement of Learning Stories in America (SALSA) proudly announces the 5th National Learning Stories Conference. Scheduled for Saturday, October 1, 2022, this virtual gathering brings thought-provoking and inspiring workshops, with keynotes by internationally acclaimed educational leaders René Colato LaÍnez, from the U.S. and Wendy Lee, from New Zealand.

Together we will uncover the multiple ways in which Learning Stories as a philosophy and approach influence how educators in vastly different contexts relate to children, families, colleagues, and school communities.

This is an opportunity to meet amazing speakers, educators, learning story writers, and authors.

Keynote Speakers:

Wendy Lee is Director of the Educational Leadership Project in Aotearoa, New Zealand, where she helped establish Learning Stories as a national approach to assessment as part of the Te Whariki Curriculum Framework. Wendy has been involved in the field of early childhood education (ECE) for over 45 years as a teacher, tutor, lecturer, manager, professional development facilitator and researcher. Wendy is co-author of several books, including Learning Stories. Constructing Learner Identities in Early Education, and Understanding the Te Whariki Approach. Early Years Education in Practice.

René Colato Laínez is a Hispanic educator and author of several bilingual award-winning children's books. His books reflect the immigrant experience from a child’s point of view, covering topics such as cultural identity issues and the difficulties of learning a second language. Most of his books are based on his own experiences. He has a master's degree from Vermont College of Fine Arts in Writing for Children & Young Adults. René is an elementary school teacher at LAUSD. His goal as a writer is to produce good multicultural children's literature; stories where minority children are portrayed in a positive way, where they can see themselves as heroes, and where they can dream and have hopes for the future. He wants to write authentic stories of Latin American children living in the United States.
