AWARD HONOREES
Chaka Khan 10-time GRAMMY® Award-winner Chaka Khan is one of the world’s most gifted and celebrated musicians. A songwriter, actor, author, philanthropist, entrepreneur and activist, Chaka Khan has influenced generations of recording artists. Despite her busy schedule, Chaka has always made time to support and uplift her community and in 1999 she founded the Chaka Khan Foundation to support women and children at risk. |
Sharon Carney Local business owner Sharon Carney started her company when cleaning her church with her grandmother and has turned it into a means of helping others. Carney Cleaning Service has hired over 40 employees from TRC’s workforce programs, including her manager and right-hand man Arthur Bowman. Each Thanksgiving she also feeds people experiencing homelessness in the Hyde Park community and hands out boots, hats, and scarves. |
RE-IMAGINING WORKING COMMUNITIES
This year's event theme is a continuation of our focus on work as a necessary aspect of building a wholistic healthy community. The coronavirus pandemic has forced abrupt changes in every work sector: we have been forced to embrace technology as a means of staying connected as we work from home; jobs that were once deemed “low-skilled” are now known as “essential”; millions have lost jobs that may never return. It has become clear that we will never restore what we had before, so we must learn from the inspiring individuals who have pioneered new fields during uncertain times. This world-changing moment is an opportunity to re-imagine and transform work as a concept so we become a better community than ever before.
ABOUT THE RENAISSANCE COLLABORATIVE
The Renaissance Collaborative (TRC) provides supportive housing to two of the most vulnerable populations in any global health crisis: formerly homeless adults and low-income seniors. TRC also conducts three workforce training programs that help individuals facing barriers to employment obtain and retain full-time jobs. TRC strives to build healthy communities where all people, regardless of background, have hope in a better future. This hope will then inspire people to set and achieve their goals and share their gifts with others to build a stronger, happier Chicago.
