Healthcare workforce challenges are pervasive right now across all geographies and positions. Learn about what other states throughout the country are doing to build a healthcare workforce pipeline. This session will highlight innovative programs that are having a real impact on developing a more robust pipeline of future healthcare workers.

This panel session will feature perspectives from the health disciplines (nursing, physical therapy, aide level, student, and more) on the current status and future vision of health occupations, what’s needed to encourage entrance into the field and to support longevity and future evolution to meet personal and community health needs.  It will be informed by some of the most comprehensive data available anywhere on the capacity and future projections for health personal for all sectors.  This discussion will shed light on what concretely needs to be done to meet the health workforce realities of today, and tomorrow.

Models for Workforce Development


Cayuga Community College-Oswego Health Early College High School (ECHS) Program

Sarah Yaw, Director, K-12 Partnerships & Academic Pathways, Cayuga Community College
Nate Murray, ECHS Medical Services Program Coordinator, Interim Assistant Principal, Fulton City School District

Learn about a partnership between a high school, community college and hospital aimed at identifying potential health system employees early in their high school years. Students can start earning a college degree in high school and prepare for a career in healthcare through internships and shadowing in a hospital setting. Enrolled students have a year of college credit by the time they graduate high school. This program is helping to re-define community, business, and educational partnerships with a lasting benefit on the future workforce of the local community.

Rhode Island Nurses Institute Middle College Charter School

Pamela McCue, Chief Executive Officer, Rhode Island Nurses Institute Middle College Charter School

Dr. McCue will share Rhode Island Nurses Institute Middle College model for pipeline development. The RINMC Charter High School opened during the summer of 2011 to educate the next generation of nurses with a focus on academic rigor, leadership development, and workforce readiness. Over the past ten years, RINIMC has graduated nearly 300 students; 90% were college and career ready and 180 of the graduates have become licensed healthcare professionals. RINMC Charter High School is the first charter school in the country dedicated to the nursing/health care professions.
