Basics

Who is it for?

A range of attendees, from managers to directors to C-Suite executives in tech, looking to hone their leadership style, build their networks, grow their personal and collective power, and advance their careers.

Do I have to identify as LGBTQ+ to attend?

While many in our audience identify as queer, trans, and/or non-binary, allies are always welcome at our events.

What can I expect from the experience?

Workshops and panels on leadership/team development, keynotes/community sessions, and lots of intentional connection time with other tech leaders.

When is this year’s Leadership Institute?

📅  Sept 16 - 18, starting Wednesday evening and concluding Friday afternoon

 Where is it happening?

📍 The majority of events will take place at City Tech College in Downtown, Brooklyn - 285 Jay Street

What’s included with registration?

Access to the full program - keynotes, workshops, panels, cohort sessions, and networking events. Expect plenty of opportunities to learn, collaborate, and connect.

I’d like to attend - how do I convince my boss to give me the time off and cover my expenses?

Our “Convince My Boss” collateral explains the ROI, and the tools and support you’ll receive on the road to becoming a more capable leader.

Can I sponsor the Institute or get my company/employee group involved?

Share your email here, and we’ll send you more info about sponsorship opportunities and perks.

Programming

Is this a multi-day event?

Yes, programming begins on the evening of Wednesday Sept 16 and concludes the afternoon of Friday Sept 18.

What’s the vibe—more “TED Talk” or more “workshop”?

The Institute is designed to be practical and skills-forward, with workshops/panels and real time to connect—less fluff, more tools + relationships.

Will the schedule be shared in advance?

Yes, a full agenda will be posted to this site and emailed to attendees as it becomes available.

What is cohort-based learning?

Cohort-based learning emphasizes collaboration, inclusivity, and discussion within a small group, led by a facilitator. It fosters social support, skill development, relationship building, and goal setting.

Travel and Logistics

Do you provide hotel blocks or travel guidance?

Yes! We have limited courtesy blocks with the following hotels:

    • The Public Hotel
    • The Marriott Brooklyn

Will meals be provided?

Drink options and light snacks will be provided throughout the conference. Lunch will be provided on Thursday Sept 17; vegan, kosher, halal, and gluten-free options will be available.

What should I wear?

Whatever makes you feel most comfortable and confident. We aren’t big on dress codes.

What should I do if I have accessibility needs?

We’ve got you covered. We’ll have closed captioning and all-gender bathrooms. All venues are wheelchair accessible, and a quiet/decompression space will be available. If you need any additional assistance, let us know in your registration.

Volunteer Exchange Program

We understand that the cost of attending conferences can be a barrier for many. To make our event more accessible, we’re offering a Volunteer Exchange Program. By contributing just four hours of your time during the conference, you can receive a full admission scholarship, granting you access to all sessions, workshops, and networking opportunities.

How It Works:

  • Apply to be a volunteer: Use the access code 'Volunteer' at the registration page to reveal a hidden Volunteer Exchange Program ticket

  • Volunteer Commitment: Complete a 4-hour volunteer shift during the conference.
  • In Exchange: Receive complimentary admission to the entire event.
  • Roles Include: Assisting with setup and breakdown, registration, guiding attendees, supporting workshop facilitators, and more.

Benefits:

  • Professional Development: Engage with industry leaders and enhance your skills.
  • Networking: Connect with fellow LGBTQ+ tech professionals.
  • Community Contribution: Play an active role in making the conference a success.

How to Apply:

Interested participants can apply by registering for a Volunteer Exchange Program ticket. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, with a final deadline of August.

Who is eligible to apply for the Volunteer Exchange Program?

Anyone passionate about LGBTQ+ representation in tech who requires financial assistance to attend the conference is encouraged to apply.

Can I choose my volunteer shift time?

We will do our best to accommodate preferred shift times based on availability and the needs of the conference.

What if my shift falls during my cohort’s meeting time? Will I still be able to participate?

Yes - volunteers assigned during cohort hours will be asked to help before, during breaks, and after sessions, but not during.

Will I receive training for my volunteer role?

Yes, all volunteers must participate in a brief mandatory training session prior to the conference to ensure you’re well-prepared.

Does volunteering guarantee free admission?

Yes, outside of your 4-hour volunteer shift, you will have full access to the entire conference. Volunteers are responsible for their own travel and accommodation expenses.

What if I need to cancel my participation?

If unforeseen circumstances arise, please notify chibbi@outintech.com as soon as possible so we can adjust accordingly.

How will I know if my application is accepted?

We will notify all applicants of their status via email by August at the latest.

Will there be a Code of Conduct?

Yes. The Out in Tech Code of Conduct applies to all Out in Tech events.

Will there be networking?

Yes—connection is a core part of the experience (structured + organic moments), and is embedded before, during, and after the conference.

Can I attend if I’m not “senior-level” yet?

Absolutely! If you’re earlier-career but already leading projects, mentoring others, or preparing for management, you may still get a ton out of it.

Will sessions be recorded?

Sessions will be recorded only for archival purposes. We are exploring virtual options for participants that cannot attend in person.

Will photos/video be taken at the event?

Yes. We will be providing an opt-out option at check-in for those members who prefer not to appear in photos/videos.

What happens if someone violates the Code of Conduct?
