Know Before You Go

🧠 Mental Health & Wellbeing

  • How can I avoid conference burnout? Conferences are exciting but can easily become overwhelming. We recommend planning your schedule mindfully by avoiding back-to-back bookings. Schedule "recharge" time between sessions to decompress and reflect. Remember, quality engagement matters more than quantity—it is perfectly okay to skip a session if you need rest.
  • Are there quiet spaces available? Yes. Identify quiet spaces within the convention area where you can step away from the crowd when needed.
  • How do I stay energized throughout the day?
    • Stay Hydrated: Bring a reusable water bottle.
    • Pack Snacks: Keep granola bars, nuts, or fruit on hand to maintain energy between sessions.
    • Set Reminders: Use your phone to set prompts for drinking water and taking short walking breaks.
    • Don't Skip Meals: Fueling your body is essential for optimal mental engagement.

👔 Conference Essentials & Packing

  • What is the dress code? Most attendees wear business casual attire. Because conference room temperatures vary, we highly recommend layered, comfortable clothing.
  • What should I pack for Vancouver in November? Vancouver in late autumn is notoriously rainy and cool.
    • Footwear: Prioritize waterproof, comfortable shoes as you will be on your feet and walking between venues frequently.
    • Tech: Pack your phone charger and a portable battery to keep your devices powered through a long day of sessions.
    • Networking: Bring physical business cards or have your digital contact info ready to share.
  • Is there a conference app? Absolutely. Download the NASPA Events App before you travel. It features the full session schedule, interactive venue maps, real-time announcements, and your personalized itinerary.

🛡️ Safety & Security

  • Is downtown Vancouver safe? Vancouver is generally very safe for tourists, especially in well-lit areas like Coal Harbour, Yaletown, and the West End. However, use standard urban precautions:
    • Buddy System: When moving between event spaces—especially after dark—travel with a colleague or share your location with a trusted friend.
    • Badge Protocol: Wear your attendee badge at all times within conference venues, but remove it immediately when leaving to avoid identifying yourself as a visitor to the general public.
  • What should I do in an emergency? For immediate emergencies, dial 911. If you feel unsafe at any time during the event, connect with NASPA staff immediately; public safety emergency announcements will be communicated via the NASPA Events App.
