This 1st Annual Art Song Festival will include a hybrid of live & online offerings. This 3-day event will explore a wide array of topics relating to the art song, including the impact of digital technology on the its creation, performance and reception. The festival will feature individual papers/presentations and lecture recitals (livestreamed, with provisional option for pre-recorded sessions followed by live discussion) and group discussions. Applications from early career scholars/performers and doctoral students are encouraged.
As well as issues concerning performance, we invite presentations exploring historical, psychological, sociological, cultural and economic aspects pertaining to art song, its audiences and presenting organizations. The event aims to bring together scholars and performing artists in a way that benefits both pedagogues and performers.
The festival will bring together a broad range of scholars and performers from around the country, including this year's Guest Artist, acclaimed mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke. She will be presenting a full recital and masterclass, both of which will be streamed live from SHSU's Gaertner Performing Arts Center. The festival will also feature SHSU's 8th Annual Art Song Competition, open to current students of the school, with a livestream of the Winners' Concert.
